When I was a child snow and winter came late November and melted away March/April. The Baltic sea was allways frozen and people travelled to the foodstore on a kicking-sledge.
Icebreakers were busy all winter to keep seaways open and longdistanceskating on the ice in outer archipelago was a common activity.
With global warming this has changed. We rarely have snow for christmas and real winter at the latitude of Stockholm is only a couple of weeks/year (normally January/February).
