This weekend has been interesting out of a cultural perspective here in Náousa/Paros/Greece. In this country easter is later than the rest of Europe and subsequntly last Friday was Longfriday and this Sunday the resurrection of Jesus was celebrated. The whole village of Náousa was full of people celebrating and going to the open chapels to pray. In the evening there was fireworks and dancing on all the restaurants. I learned that this was an old tradition and an important part of Greek culture.
I come from a country where large parts of the media,cultural, and political elite nowadays seriously claim that Sweden has no culture of it´s own. Obviously all traditions I grew up with (christmas,easter,valborg,midsummer, and so on...) including all our national writers(August Strindberg),musicians(Evert Taube) and painters(Anders Zorn) really never meant anything and had no clear connection to our country and it´s nature. If you try to explain that to someone from an other country they just don´t understand what you mean.
