35:31.88N 076:37.24W Super boring day - we left our peaceful anchorage at 06.20 heading for the Alligator river bridge just over 20 miles away, we managed a bit of a sail assisted motor for about an hour before we had to put the genoa away, about an hour before the bridge there was an announcement on VHF saying the Alligator river bridge wouldn’t open for at least 4 hours 😱, not good as we were on a mission to cover a lot of miles and get to Belhaven before some strong winds tonight. We slowed down as no point in rushing. When we got to the bridge we anchored with a couple of motor boats and were going to settle in for a wait, Steve decided to call the bridge to ask when he thought he would be opening so we could look at other options for where to head for, The Bridge operator said he was opening in a few minutes! Other boats called in and he said to get in line as he was opening - by the time we had upped anchor the bridge was opening so we headed on through - we weren’t anchored for more than 10 minutes - result! Nothing much else happened a fair few motorboats passed us, a few idiots seem to have no regard for the waterways destroying and erroding the river banks as they go with their wash, then people wonder why the trees fall roots give way and the trees fall over! And his wash The sports fisher below was approaching from behind with a great big bow wave got his come upance from mother nature, he was flying along well to one side of the recommended track when he came to an abrupt stop and stayed there until the motorboat he had recently passed caught up with him and kindly towed him off the tree stump or what ever he was high and dry on! Needless to say it didn’t seem like there was any significant damage when he caught up with us a couple of miles further on in open water he was going fast again with his Trump boards on his bow! Most of the day was grey but when the sun did come out the trees looked lovely as their leaves turn red. The most exciting thing that happened today was when we saw a few deer drinking down at the water's edge - pictures are not so clear though We made it it Belhaven shortly before dark and anchored while we could still see what we were doing. |
