30:46.055N 081:28.292W In the morning the forecast wasn’t quite so good, strong winds for longer and more westerly than we had hoped for but we decided to leave anyway, we left at 7am the boat anchored next to us had left a couple of hours earlier as they were heading to a different destination and just doing a day sail they wanted to get in in day light, we could see their progress on marine traffic and they appeared to be able to head in a good direction, We messaged Tom and Sabrina, who were going to leave later from a different inlet, to say we were off and headed out with mizzen and 3 reefs in the genoa, as we expected it was be a pretty uncomfortable sail, we headed high into the wind to stay fairly near the coast and minimise the sea state which was pretty horrible with short confused waves. The East coast is shallow for a long way off shore and to stay in about 10 meters of water you are often over 10 miles from the shore. We did well though and although the boat was heeled and getting absolutely covered in salt she seemed to enjoy herself and was flying along. We were making great progress and reef down further to slow down and make it more comfortable, Tom and Sabrina showed up on AIS as they left their inlet later in the day - by now we had a few boats (well they were all catamarans actually🙄) that had left Charleston after us on AIS as well and we could hear some chat between them on the VHF - one was on full Jib and one reef in the main - of course they don't heel but in up to 25 knots of true wind forward of the beam it sounded a bit over canvassed to us? It did end up 17miles ahead of us at one point, before it stopped to wait for first light to go in to the inlet 🤣. We had a rather cold, lively sail, at one point we were less than a mile from Honey Ryder but it wasn’t until about midnight that we got the wind more on the beam and managed to get a few hours sleep each, by morning we were at the St Marys inlet, very happy to have sailed from inlet to inlet and glad we left when we did as those boats leaving today will have virtually no wind in an hour or two! We made our way up to Cumberland island, anchored and went to sleep again! |
