We took a ferry trip over to Pico with Vaiva’s Mark, Karen and Andy, there
were no 6 seaters for hire so we hired two cars for the day.
It was rather grey and overcast with low cloud as we drove along the coast
road so we missed out on some of the spectacular views.
Pico like Faial is volcanic and the land is very rocky, where it’s cleared
for growing crops the rocks are made into walls like around these vines.
A restored old windmill on the coast.

We drove across the island and didn't get to see much at all, this lake
appeared for two minutes before being swallowed by the clouds again!
and by the time we got to the north side it really was grey.
We stopped at a whaling museum and a whale processing factory museum where
they made vitamins, oil, animal feed, fertilizer etc out of the whales,
interesting but gory!
One of the whaling boats, in the more recent times these boats were towed
out by motor boats then used to quietly row or sail up to the whales ensuring
engine sounds didn't frighten them and make them dive!
The whale carcases were dragged up ramps, all the harbours have one
The factory had 4 massive boilers for melting the blubber into oil!
