We had a good day yesterday, sea was sloppy at times and the sails flogged when the wind speeds were low but we kept going at a reasonable rate. During the night there were a few rain squalls and by 3am we had lightning ahead and behind us. We managed to dodge the squalls and lightening going over us but we got the edge of the squall at times. Between 3 and 6am we had a hairy ride — with gusts up to 31knots we averaged over 9.5kts/hr 😱. We struggled to get out of the Gulf Stream enough to leave the squalls behind but got to the edge by about 6am and are now sailing in sunshine and 16knots making good progress towards Cape Hatteras and Diamond shoals and should be there by our lunch time.
We then have another 120 miles to get into Chesapeake bay.
