Before going into service we needed to say hello to the penguins. There are three species of penguins on the islands and the king penguin is the biggest and easiest to approach.

Sea lions frequently visit Port Stanley and can then be seen from the beachwalk.

After three days of handover it was time to go into servitude. I will be surgeon on call for 2 1/2 months serving a population of around 4.000 plus 2.000 Royal Marines. Moreover cruise ships frequently visit the islands (next week with 7.500 passengers) and with an average age between 70-80 , medical issues are common. There are also overseas fishing fleets around the islands sometimes in need of a surgeon.

Never the less the catchment area is small and workload should be decent.

The hospital is modern, reasonably well equipped, and served by 6 experienced GP`s , one surgeon, and one anaesthetist. It will be an interesting experience and well worth an article in The Swedish Journal of Surgery upon return.
