After a rather simple meat at the yacht club yesterday evening we got a good night's sleep in our berth innermost in the marina. Today there was just some organization of beds to be sorted out and the water tank to be topped up before we could have a farewell coffee with Trude and Maria and get under way.

There was not a lot of wind, but it seemed that we were in the lee of the island, so to get out into the true wind as quickly as possible we chose to sail the "wrong" way round São Miguel, going west of it. We had headwinds all along the coast which turned about northerly and died promptly away as we left the island behind us. We have been motor sailing since at about 4.5 knots with the motor just on a quick tick-over.

Despite the lack of wind it has been a very pleasant start to the journey in sun and warmish temperatures. We have already caught the trip's first fish - a big mackerel like thing - and seen some dolphins. We need another fish of the same size if we are to have fish as the main course though.
