Philipsburg er et litt artig sted. Her er det tydeligvis at landets skattefrie status har skapt en hel industri. Cruisehavnen er stor og det lå en gedigen cruisskip her i dag, pluss to av noe mindre dimensjon. Her skal det selges alkohol, sigaretter, smykker, klokker, kameraer og alt av elektroniske duppeditter som finns - helt uten moms. Det er ikke måte på antall butikker som selger disse varene, noen store andre små. Av smykker osv finer man både de billige og dyre. Vi så på noen Breitiling klokker i dag (dame-størrelse, uten å nevne navn), priser fra US$3000 og oppover. Det holdte med å se på dem. Bortsett fra å handle mat og litt mer vin og rom, endte vi ikke opp med mer enn tannpasta, sjampo, conditioner og et par Ray Ban solbriller som Rønnaug har kjøpt til bursdagen min. Det var i all fall en underholdende dag - inkludert en lunsjpause. Priser på å spise/drikke ute er lave sett i forhold til St. Barths - en øl her koster $1.50 - ca. én euro, mens på St. Barths var det 4-5 euro.  Dermed skal vi spise middag ute på byen i kveld. Det lokale valuta heter NAF - Nederlandsk Antilles Florin, men US$ er mer utbredt.Dagens bilde viser stranda ved Philipsburg, med Nano til høyre i bildet.

 

Philipsburg is quite an interesting place. The county's duty free status has created an entire industry of shops catering for the cruise ship passengers. There are hundreds of shops selling booze, tobacco, jewellery, watches, cameras and all sorts of electronic gizmos - all without VAT. Big shops and little shops, some with very uip market brands, others with the cheaper end of things. We looked at some Breitling watches (lady's size, but otherwise not mentioning who was the potential purchaser) which started at US$3000 and then upwards. We ended up only buying food with some wine and rum together with shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste, plus a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses for me as a birthday present. It was a fun day - including a nice simple lunch. Eating out (and drinking) is cheap here, especially compared to St. Barths. A beer costs $1.50 (just over one euro), compared to 4-5 euros on St. Barths. Thus we are going out for dinner tonight. The official currency here is the NAF (Netherlands Antilles Florin), but everything is priced in US$. It is nteresting that they didn't change to the Euro in line with the French islands. Today's picture is of the long white beach here, Nano in the far right of the picture.
