Dolphins - always difficult to take pictures of with a digital camera.

The sail from Horta to Ponta Delgada is about 150 miles; we left just after two. One must first sail a southerly course to get through the straights between Faial and Pico, then follow Pico's southern coast before plotting a course directly for São Miguel's southern coast. We left the harbour of Horta having filled diesel - which due to a mistake on my part, meant that we had full jerry cans and reserve tanks, but the main tank was only half full. We were planning on topping up at Ponta Delgada anyway - and we did intend to sail after all. We started with a reasonable wind in the straights between the islands, but this is an acceleration zone where the wind is stronger due to the funnelling effect of the two islands. After an hour we started the motor as the wind died away. Slowly the wind built again and we motorsailed the entire evening and most of the night until four when we could finally stop the motor and sail on a beam reach at five to six knots. While yesterday afternoon was a bit of a sad affair of low clouds, drizzle and little wind, the night produced some starry skies and the morning looked much more promising. We saw just two fishing boats on the crossing, but were treated to entertainment by a school of large dolphins who played around the boat for a few minutes - see today's picture. At the warmest part of the day we could strip off and have a shower on deck in the sun - lovely. We got into Ponta Delgada harbout at 15:30. The harbour was full so we were told to anchor in the industrial part of the harbour until yachts leave tomorrow.
