English version
We were swimming at 12:00 UTC yesterday - the position in the blog. The sea
was 25C and azure blue. The swim and freshwater shower was a most refreshing
break. The weather forecast we downloaded together with our e-mails said that we
should get good winds in 24 hours, particularly if south of 20 degrees, so with
that in mind we started the motor and headed south west at a little over five
knots. With the motor running we have lots of power, so we put the water-maker
on to keep abreast of our consumption. However the fresh water only came out in
drips, so there was clearly something wrong. Having checked everything, and
tried with the motor on, off and just at tick-over, the only conclusion was that
the air bubbles which still seemed to be in the hoses would have to get pumped
through before the unit would work properly. I left it producing the odd drip
into a 1.5l bottle while we enjoyed lunch on deck. Returning below the bottle
was full, and water had run over - fortunately mostly into the bilge. Clearly
the air problem was solved for the time being. Later the production stopped
again and we spent some time looking for air bubbles. There were lots coming in
the pipe entering the water-maker, but none in the pipe going to the
fine-filter. After smearing vaseline on the O-ring on the filter and tightening
it hard we are sitting with the conclision that a little three way valve on the
inlet to the filter must leak air in to the sea water flow. This point is just
above sea level so there is normally very little under pressure here, but when
the motor is running there will be more under pressure as both unist share the
same water inlet and strainer. I have devised an experiment to identify if there
is a leak here which we will do after sending this blog. The result will come in
tomorrow's entry..
The bread baking was a real success - one loaf went for lunch and we put
the other away for the next lunch. Rønnaug has also had a check of the fruit and
vegetable store, truning everything over and picking out things which are going
off. Things which are getting close to being ready to eat are moved to the
fridge.
The lack of wind meant that we motored from finishing our swim at midday
right through the night until nine in the morning, when the wind had increased
enouth to make it worthwhile sailing, though only at 4-5 knots. This however is
much better than motoring! The angle of the wind suggested also that the time
was right to head straight towards St. Lucia which we now are doing.
I am going to test if I can get tiny pictures sent - so hopefully you see a
picture of the bread baking..
