Vinden har nå løyet, og en del blå flekker dukker opp på himmelen. Enda en
lat start på dagen, så tok vi en taxi (bussen som var oppsatt i
rutetabellen kom aldri!) over til den lille byen Stromness på vestkysten av
øya Mainland. Turen tok en halvtime og førte oss gjennom det frodige landskapet.
I Stromness traff vi (denne gangen etter avtale) våre danske venner, og brukte
dagen til å være turister. Stromness er atskillig mindre enn Kirkwall, og det
tok ikke så lang tid til å ha utforsket stedet i sin helhet - spesielt på en
søndag. Bussruta er ikke spesielt velutviklet på en søndag, og siste buss hjem
gikk rundt fem-tiden, så det ble en forholdsvis kort dag i Stromness. Vi valgte
å forlate Kirkwall for kvelden, ikke minst pga. den høye havneavgiften, og
reiste bare 4 mil over sundet til Elwick. Her ligger hovedsetet til øya
Shapinsey, med en slott der portvakterens hus nå er en pub. Der inntok vi en
half pint hver. Vi tuslet litt rundt øya før det var på tide med å gå tilbake
til båten. Etter den store pub-lunsjen i Stromness, hadde vi ikke appetitt til
middag, så det ble en skive toast med røkelaks. Vi lå utenfor en lokal fiskebåt
og hadde det egentlig som plommen i egget.

  The winds have now died down, and the skies cleared a little to expose som
blue patches. Today we had another leisurely start to the day, then took a taxi
(the bus which should have taken us there never turned up at the bus
station) to Stromness on the other side of the island of Mainland. The trip
took us through the quite lush farmland, and took about half an hour. Here we
met up with our Danish friends again, and had a leisurely walk around the town -
which is considerably smaller than Kirkwall. The Sunday bus sesrvice is not very
regular, the last bus being at five in the afternoon, so our stay in Stromness
was fairly short, but long enough to be able to say that we have seen the place.
We decided to leave Kirkwall (not least due to the high harbour fees), and went
the 4 miles over the sound to Elwick. The village of Balfour has a large almost
castle like stately home, the gatehouse of which is now the local pub. We
enjoyed a half pint there before strolling round the island, spotting a number
of pheasants in the grounds of the castle. Bact to the boat for a smoked salmon
toast and glas of wine. We had a large pub lunch in Stromness and had noe real
appetite this evening.
