St. Barths er Karibias versjon av Antibes eller St. Tropez. Det er her de
rike samler seg - og spesielt denne helga da den årlige regatta "St. Barths'
Bucket" går sin gang. Dette er ikke noe Færder eller Skagerrak Race - her er det
høy sigarføring i en helt annen klasse. Jeg har ikke lest reglene, men jeg har
ikke sett noen båter under 80 fot som deltar. Vi snakker og verdens største og
vakreste seilbåter, både moderne og klassiske. Det var et flott syn å se
båtene runde odden og seile over målstreken i dag. Selv om det er en regatta for
seilbåter, ligger det 10-12 svære motoryachter her også - dvs. 150 fot
pluss i størrelse. Mange mindre båter som oss er også her for å se og smake på
stemningen. Dagens bilde viser litt av kontrastene mellom den slitte båten i
forgrunnen og super-yachtene i bakgrunnen. Byen yrer av liv og butikkene,
som er av de aller dyreste sortene som Hermes, Dior, Loius Vuitton, Chanel,
Bvlgari osv, gjør gode penger med så mange rikinger samlet samtidig. Rønnaug
tittet rundt disse butikkene i dag, men kom heldigvis fra det med kredittkortet
i behold. Selv de billigste plaggene kostet 500 euro pluss! Jeg nøyde meg med en
tur innom båtutstyrsbutikken og kjøpte med en inverter til 50 euro - som jeg har
nå fått skrudd på plass og forsynt med strøm.
Her er det ankrings plass for store og små, rik og
fattig.

St. Barths is the Caribbean's equivalent of Antibes or St. Tropez in the
Mediterranean. The rich and famous gather here, especially this week when the
yearly regatta "St. Barths' Bucket" is held. This is not your average Cowes'
week or Sunday bash round the cans - this is for the seriously big yachts. I
haven't studied the rules, but I have not seen anything smaller then 80 feet
competing - most yachts being well over the 100 mark. The participants are
mostly modern yachts, though there are a handful of more classic boats here. It
was quite a sight seeing them closing the finishing line this afternoon. Money
attracts money - so although this is a sailing event there are 10-12 huge motor
yachts here too - we are talking 150 feet and upwards here! There are also lots
of normal boats here too, watching the racing and soaking up the atmosphere
created by this show of beauty and wealth. Today's picture shows the contrast of
the rather beaten up boat in the foreground and the super-yachts in the
background. The shops in town - the most expensive of the designer shops such as
Hermes, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Bvlgari, Chanel etc. seem to be doing a good trade
with their duty-free prices (the whole of St. Barths is a duty-free zone).
Rønnaug had a look round these shops this morning, escaping unscathed and with
credit card untouched. The cheapest items of clothing started at 500 euros! I
was happy with a trip to the chandlers to get a new inverter for the PC which is
now mounted in position and supplied with electricity.
