What a morning! We put out the fishing line and very soon had a bite. A dorado which we got as far as gaffing before it managed to get off the hook and get away. Somewhat disappointing after all the effort Steve put in to get it in as far as the boat. Never mind, we put the line out again. No more than ten minutes later, it was whirring again, and we had another dorado on the line - a big one! This one took a long time to reel in, and we got it to about a boat length away from the stern and it also managed to get off the hook and away. Even more disappointing, but we still had the lure, so out it went again. Half an hour later off went the line again, and this time we got a sailfish, a huge one, and there was no way we were going to be able to get it on board. I was in the process of the getting the camera to get a picture of it before cutting it loose when it managed to hook the line around our stern ladder and break it, and off it went too.

So a good morning of sport and excitement, but not a fish fillet to show for it! Oh well, you can't win them all.

We now have about 60 nmiles left to go, and with our usual bad timing will arrive late in the evening. We therefore have to slow down in order to arrive in daylight. Unfortunately the GRIB files are showing some squally weather between here and Fatu Hiva from this evening through to lunchtime tomorrow, so it might be a lively night.
