We set off very early on Tuesday morning and arrived at Dougga just after 8am. This was planned so we could explore the hill top Roman town while it was still relatively cool.

Dougga is probably one of the best complete Roman towns. Wandering around you really got a feel for life in a Roman town. The building that dominates the area is the Capitole, with it’s 10m high walls and 6 one-piece columns 8m high. People occupied the ruins until the 1950’s, when they were moved to the town down the road.

The Roman streets have hardly changed. We also photographed the communal toilets (seating for 12).

While we were admiring the theatre we were interrupted by a French film crew who wanted to film it with out us in it. We went off to the café for an ice cream while they filmed. Even there we weren’t far enough away as our shade umbrella was removed as it was “spoiling the shot”
