Over the last two days we have hired a car and been off exploring Northern Tunisia.

We picked up the hire car early on Monday morning and set off with our map of Tunisia. We managed to find our way out of Bizerte without too much of a problem. Once on the “open road” every town was well sign posted and we failed to get lost at all.

The Tunisian driving was quite good, and they drove on the right hand side most of the time, only occasionally trying to make us feel at home by driving on the left. We only saw one kamikaze over taking maneuver.

Tunisia has a lot of police check points on the roads. At the first one we were asked to stop, Stephen did stop. The policeman said “avante” so Stephen started driving off. He really did do quite well running after the car while blowing his whistle, so we stopped again. A few smiles and a handshake and all was ok – apparently he just wanted Stephen to move off the road a bit more! After that we managed to get the hang of the police check points. Being a foreigner, Stephen managed to get away with rolling stops instead of proper stops.

Most of the country side is dedicated to agriculture, with wheat being the most common crop as well as olive trees. Below are some pictures of the countryside including stork nests on top of electrical pylons (by design as they install platforms for the storks).
