We headed east about 150km and arrived at Bulla Regia around lunch time. Here the Romans built an underground city to escape from the heat. The servant quarters were above ground.

Quite a lot is still well preserved and it was possible to walk into complete Roman rooms instead of extrapolating from waste high walls. The mosaics were fantastic and very detailed.

The Romans also invented natural air conditioning – the ceilings had thousands of terracotta pipes inside other pipes that drew the moist air upwards to dry the inside. It also acted as insulation from the cold winters and helped circulate air. This explains why the mosaics are stil in excellent condition.
