We left Kilada around 11 o’clock and motored out of the bay as no breeze was apparent. That was lucky as about 1/2 hour out Jim spotted a large turtle in the surface and about ten minutes later another one swimming along. Our lucky day!
The breeze came in with the usual afternoon timing and we were able to put out the genny and sail up to Nafplio. The wind gradually turned to be behind us by the time we got to the Bourtzi island fortress. The genny came down and we negotiated our way past the fortress which acquired its appearance during the second Venetian occupation and until 1939
had the dubious distinction of being the local executioners residence. It defended the only navigable passage in the bay. If necessary the fortress could be closed off by a chain extending from the fortress to the town.
The wind blew between the high Palamidi fortress and the harbour and it was quite a struggle to get on the quay but we did it. Amazingly an hour later the wind dropped and it was a different world.
