Friday 23rd August, 2013.

We started breakfast with the delicious figs which taste almost like strawberries and cereal before we went for a cycle ride to find the castle.  We stopped at the Mitilini statue of Liberty which is very large which shows a very tiny Jim in the photograph.  The locals have made a small rock area into a bathing area for themselves by adding a couple of ladders to climb down into the water.

We followed the signs for the castle but as you can see we did not find the entrance only about two dozen dogs lazing in the sun and a dead end.  The dogs didn’t take any notice of us and we figured they must be fed by the locals as they were all well covered.  A couple of small shelters had been made for them and we saw large old bones which must have come from a butcher.  There were no houses in the area so who feeds them and brings them water is a mystery.

I took a photograph of the poster we were following but we only came to a dead end.  We may try and discover the castle entrance another day from a different direction.  We were not the only ones as a couple of cars followed the same route and turned around at the dead end.

We have had some cloud today but it is still very hot and the sun didn’t take long to come through the cloud.

The Navy and coast guard boats go out every evening from here. We were warned further down the coast that many immigrants try to reach the Greek islands from Turkey on their way from the east and not to pick up any boat people or go near as they will try and climb aboard as they are so desperate.  Thank goodness we have not seen any yet!
