Saturday, 18th August, 2012.
We said our goodbyes and left Sami around 9.30 a.m. with hot fresh bread from the bakers for lunch. Jim had the main up in hope but as soon as we were out in the channel the breeze disappeared and we had to motor with the main to help. I took a couple of photographs of the mountains as we left as the Ionian is very beautiful especially on sunny mornings. We saw two tuna but they did not jump on our line. We passed two yachts and two ferries and that is all we saw in the 33.7 miles from Sami to Killini on the Peloponnese.
We saw the lighthouse on Nisis Kavikalidha from many miles away as well as the castle Torneze high up on the mountain which we saw like a beacon at night from Zakynthos town the week before.
The first harbour is for ferries only and the second is much smaller for fishing boats and a few visitors. We were lucky to moor alongside the quay which saved getting the dinghy off its davits and just meant I had to jump with the lines. On the first quay there is a sailor’s church painted white with a blue roof.
We were tied up by 4.30 and so after a cup of tea we walked to the beach area where hundreds of people were gathered lazing on beach beds and under umbrellas enjoying themselves. The beach has very soft sand and the water is very warm. The children were taken care of with floating toys.
The day ended with a beautiful sunset.
