We left some of our friends from the rally and motored out of Nisiros little harbour in our quest to move closer to where we are meeting up with our friends Richard and Jeannette next week while they are on a cruise around Greece.

We had a good sail across to the Island of Tilos and only took down our sails as we entered the big bay.  We had covered 17.44 miles with a top speed of 6 knots. There is very little space in the harbour and with a few boats we could hear shouting about cross anchors at the boat which had gone in before us we decided we would have peace and quiet at anchor just outside.

Livadia which is the capital is a charming little village with a pebble beach and a pavement with trees all around the bay. The houses are all nicely painted white with attractive blue shutters and doors. The large white and red church of Nikolaos dominates the middle of the bay.  Along the beach road is the very tiny Christian church of Pantelemon kai Polykarpos which is reported to have an attractive mosaic floor which we could not see as it the door was padlocked.

There is one big hotel and lots of small apartment blocks along the beach area with taverna’s everywhere.  The ferry boat arrives and leaves on its way to Rhodes twice a day. For peace and quiet and a chance to switch off Tilos is just the place.

The island is a resting place for migrating birds and attracts birdwatchers from around the world. We understand in the centre of the island there are small farms growing everything from tobacco to almonds and the shops did have fresh lettuce for sale which we did not have on Nisiros.

One interesting point I read was that there is abandoned village in the mountains called Mikro Chorio with about 220 roofless buildings because when the residents moved down to Livadia in the 1950’s they took their stone roofs with them. The ruins are illuminated at night and one house has been restored as a bar for visitors.
