Marathos Island
Thursday 10th June, 2021.
We left Patmos harbour and motored around to the bay of Grisko as it is famous for being voted the best bay in the whole world under the UNESCO flag. Hopefully we will come back as a smashing bay with hotels, shops and ice creams which Jim just loves.
The wind had got up and we had a fabulous sail for the 10.34 km to Marathos Island and entering the Macatho Spalathron anchorage. We followed the electronics and avoided the rocks and anchored in the bay as the buoys seemed to close to the shore for us.
Ariel performed well with 8 ½ and 9 knots being recorded with a reefed main and a small genoa being flown. She is a super trooper with a speed we have never experienced with any of past boats.
Macatho Spalathron is a very pretty little bay with goats on the hills and no roads as such but three tavena’s but only one open. We walked up the goat tracks through very rough stony fields/paddocks to the church at the top of the hill. The views were to die for and with the sunset just perfect to finish the day. We had a very peaceful night and even the two cockerels didn’t start until 7 o’clock.
