Zakynthos town by night.

Zakynthos town by night is very busy with so many restaurants, bars and clubs and souvenir shops.  After the quiet towns and villages of the last few weeks it is quite an eye opener.  Thousands of people seem to come into town from around the area.  We took a walk around the quay to the Agios Dionysios church which is very impressive.  Agios Dionysios was the island’s patron saint (1547-1622) and his body is housed in a silver coffin inside the church which everyone can see.  The church was built in 1925 but it survived the earthquake unlike most of Zakynthos.  There are beautiful paintings on every wall and ceiling with no spaces between each one and beautiful gates of gold across the high altar.

Although we could not visit it as it was closed the Byzantine Museum has a scale model of the pre-earthquake town which was an elegant city built by the Venetians.  It also contains a collection of items rescued from the island’s destroyed churches and monasteries.

High above the town is the Strani Hill which offers good views over the town, harbour and over to mainland Greece.
