Gaios is just less than 6 miles from Vrika bay.  Gaios is an attractive port naturally protected by two islets of Panagia and Agios Nikolaos giving the resemblance of a Norwegian fjord with the advantage of sunlight most days of the year.  Gaios is the capital and main port of Paxos.  According to legend it took its name from a student of Saint Paul who taught the Paxiot’s Christianity.  The islet of Panagia is dominated by a monastery while the islet of Agios Nikolaos there is a Venetian castle dating from 1423.

We motored into the inlet and due to lack of space (no spaces) we motored out again and anchored outside in order to go ashore for provisions.  It is a lovely town with hundreds of small shops and restaurants with the added bonus of a long waterfront to wander.   The ferry brings the holiday makers from Corfu town and they walk along the waterfront with their suitcases in search of their hotels.  In the evening we went ashore again for ice-creams and a cold beer.
