Sami to Argostoli and Poros by car

18th June, 2012.

We decided to hire a car and explore the south half of Kefallonia in order to visit Argostoli.  We were interested in seeing if the marina there had been finished but after a beautiful drive over the mountains from Sami we discovered that it was like a unfinished grave yard for some boats.  From the top of the mountains Argostoli looks wonderful.  There is lush countryside, brightly painted villas and from the marina side of the harbour it looks very pretty. Argostoli use to have narrow streets but since it was destroyed in the earthquake the town has taken on a very Italian style main street for pedestrians only with coffee shops, boutiques and jewellery shops. The Drapanose Bridge which was built during the British rule in 1813 for pedestrians and horses to use instead of having to walk around approximately 3 miles from one side to the other is unfortunately is now closed for repairs. At present there does not seem to be any sign that any work has taken place in the last few years.

We continued south and stopped for lunch at one of the beach taverna’s over looking Zakynthos.  The views were breath taking and we could see why Gordon and Jeannie had chosen such a lovely spot for their holiday.  They joined us for drinks and afterwards we drove 2 minutes to their villa overlooking the beach and swam in their very nice pool.

We left to continue on our tour and our next stop was Poros.  It is definitely a small port and to be used only with the right wind conditions.  Possibly we may stop here if necessary.  We met a couple of boats on the wall who we had met on our travels who were like us trying out different areas to sail and take shelter for the night.  Port Police are very much in control at Poros and make sure they visit each boat for their money.

On our tour back to Sami we went through the mountains passing Mount Ainos which is 5,350 feet high.  We had to stop the car while a goat shepherd herded his goats all wearing bells from one part of the National Park over the road to the other.  We did not see the wild horses which also live in the National Park.  The slopes of the mountain are covered with native fir tree, Abies cephalonica.

Kefallonia is a great place to visit with an airport on the island, ferries which connect with some of the other islands and the mainland.  It is just a very friendly clean place to holiday on.
