Note for any future visitors to Puerto Sherry – the Pilot Book says that the Cadiz ferry at Puerto de Santo Maria is 30 mins walk from Puerto Sherry – it is not, unless we cycled very slowly.

Tuesday 12 October is National Day in Spain and our 20 min cycle to the ferry at Puerto de Santa Maria took in a huge street market in honour of the occasion; imagine the car boot sale from hell and you will get the general idea.

The 40 min ferry ride into Cadiz harbour was a great way to get onto the city.  Not having started particularly early we celebrated the trip with lunch followed by a one hour open top bus trip around the city, complete with headset commentary in English.

The main city gate.  The original entrance is under the tower.  Apparently when the two large modern entrances were being created the demolition charges went wrong and the whole of the tower was blown up – I wonder whose PI insurance paid out to rebuild the original!

Being a festival day there were very few ferries running and we made the 17:40 ferry back to Puerto de Santa Maria where to our relief our bicycles were still chained up where we had left them.

The delights of Puerto Sherry being somewhat lacklustre we had a pleasant meal aboard and retired early.

Cadiz cathedral, taken from the sea whilst en-route to Barbete the next day.
