Four nights and three days were spent in Atuona which was a good break after nearly three weeks at sea.  There was the opportunity for simple provisioning, a couple of meals ashore and an island trip by 4x4 to see the north side of Hiva Oa and visit a famous Tiki ceremonial site.

The Gaugin exhibition has a large selection of copies of the artist’s work.  He lived the latter part of his life on Hiva Oa and is buried here

One of the stops on our island tour was to climb into the forest to view petroglyphs, ancient Polynesian graffiti and religious symbols

The beautiful Baie Puamau on the north east side of Hiva Oa

These twin obelisk are a prominent landmark on the north east coast of Hiva Oa

Spot the Tiki.  Puamau has one of the most extensive archaeological sites on Hiva Oa
