Date 1130 Sunday 18 September 2011
Shortly after midnight we had one fishing boat that I suspect was busy
working and did notice our VHF calls. Every time that we changed course he
with unerring accuracy and precision appeared to change to head towards a
collision. It was therefore on with every light that we could muster and
eventually he noticed the “oil rig” coming towards him; after a
sociable chat we missed each other.
Rock and roll down wind but as the wind veered further we came onto
more of a reach and speed increased so that by dawn we were not only in sight
of Cape Charles but closing our waypoint at a
good 7 to 8 knots.
0900 saw us inside the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel and it felt almost like
coming home having arrived at the same point in May but from Bermuda.
What really finished off the trip well was that we were able to sail the 15nm
from the Bridge Tunnel right into Norfolk which
given the lack of appropriate wind earlier in our trip from Gloucester was a great way to finish the
passage.
1130 saw us once again secured in Gary and Greta’s, OCC Port
Officers, dock in central Norfolk.
