> Life is sort of at stand still. Waiting times. We feel it would be great to get a brake from moving and moving. Especially in this harbor it is almost dangerous to get ashore. We have been fighting big waves that even broke three snub lines to the anchor.
> Let me try to give you a picture on what it has been like to get ashore. Be patient....
> First imagine a 17 ton boat moving up and down AND backward and forward. As it moves forward it comes to a sudden stop when four lines ashore get tight with a shriek that makes you wonder when they will break. Then she goes backwards until the chain to the anchor gets pulled to an end and the snub takes all the load with another shriek. Now that was ONE momentum. Next thing is that when the waves come under the boat they lift her about 2 meters up and then she comes down with a big splash in the aft-WOOOOOSHHHHH! If anybody is close to that you might as well jump in the water, you will be wet from top to toe.
> OK now you want to get in the dinghy? Well you do it from the center of the boat, that's where you are away from the WOOOOOSHHHHH-shower.
> You climb out on the side off the boat and wait until the dinghy is far up and you step down without hesitation. If you wait you will be hanging on the side, waiting for the dinghy to scoop you up, if it is still there. IF you made it into the dinghy and want to get ashore it is now that the fun starts. You might have seen horror movies where the hero has to run in between big circle saws as they move back and forth. Or there is some kind of holes that opens up and closes, and they have to jump in between.
> So figure this. Now you are in the dinghy, between two boats that are moving on both sides of you, and you feel very small beside them. As we have a line ashore we can pull ourselves to a ladder by the concrete dock. It is about 5-10 meters to go. BUT you have to sync your movement with 4 lines that run across your track. Every time the boats move forward the lines are stretched, then they come back and the lines are in the water. IF you miss a line, and it comes under the dinghy you will be shot off to inner space. WOOOOOOAAAAAAANGGGGG! Thats the sound of a dinghy that happens to be on a line as it stretches with 17 tons of force.
> So to avoid the WOOOOOOAAAAAAANGGGGG! you have to sit there, moving up and down with the dinghy, waiting for the exact moment. And when it comes, you pull, and you pull fast! IF you have bad luck or did not check your stern line that goes back to the boat (we need one to get home as well) it will tangle around something and the dinghy stops in the middle of the stretching lines. Well you are not in for a WOOOOOOAAAAAAANGGGGG!, because you are under the lines already. But you are in for a double WOOOOOSHHHHH-shower from the boats on both sides of you. It's called a stereo WOOOOOSHHHHH!
> OK, so now comes the next challenge- get ashore from the dinghy. The dock is built for big ships and to make life easy somebody welded stairs for the yachters.
> The stair moves around since it is only hanging on two feet. Sometimes a line gets tangled in the stair and pulls it right out from the dock, with a SQUUUUIIIIRRRRT!
> But the stairs are not the challenge, the guy who welded them thought that you need hand rails and they go all the way down into the water.
> Well a dinghy can't get in between so you have to sort of jump from the dinghy to the stairs as the whole equipage is moving up and down 1-2 meter.
> Do not be stressed as you hear the WOOOOOSHHHHH behind you and the WOOOOOSHHHHH on your side, because there are enormous tires hanging on the dock to protect BIG ships. One of the big tires is just next to the stairs. If you have bad luck a WOOOOOSHHHHH will happen just as you are entering the stairs and you will end up being thrown ashore by the SQUUUUIIIIRRRRT, and there you are, wet as a rag. But alive. Now, add some assignments to this. Get your laundry ashore, or even better take your clean dry laundry on board. Why not bring some kids that you love and would like to bring with you in one piece. But of course they ENJOY! I mean how boring is it when nothing moves!!!!
> The other night we were invited to look at a movie on Miss My, so we had to go ashore first, walk down to their boat and make an interesting trip to their boat. They do not have a ladder there, just the big tires, so you have to climb the tires to get down...
> As you might guess, one beer is enought.
