Like most Australians, I've heard about countries like Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, etc, but only had a vague notion of where they were, complicated sometimes by news reports of border realignment and ethnic fighting. But now I am experiencing it first hand. Apart from the "border police", who are friendly enough, but somewhat officious, the locals are incredibly helpful and friendly. Most of them speak very good English.

The only way I could get a good internet connection, was to actually sit in this rotatable dockside apparatus. Can't complain. Any wifi is welcome!

This shell riddled water tower on the Croation side of the Danube has become somewhat of a monument because it refused to fall.

On the left is a huge floating restaurant, lavishly decorated, at huge expense I'm sure. But we were the only customers on this night. We had requested, and been given permission to tie up on the river side....the safest and easiest place, but we were informed that massive cruise ships were expected, so the lovely owner said we could raft up to his launch on the "inland" side. It doesn't show here, but the current is strong, so mooring is tricky. Not only did he refuse payment, he gave US a nice bottle of wine as we were leaving.

The Serbs must have really been targeting whoever was sheltering in this house, back in '91. New windows but the odd shell damage remains.
