Upon arrival, 13:th, here in Zupthen we opened the locker in the galley to get a cask of wine. To our horror all the compartment under the floor boards was full of water and everything down there was swimming.
It’s late afternoon we are not in a mood for this at all. It took us a couple of hours to, a pump, some buckets and sponges to get the water out and to dry and sort out the wet mess. We where not happy at all. Where does that bloody water come from?!
Further investigation has to be done next morning. There are more water. Time to have a look aft in what we call the “lazaretto ”. It's more then full of water, and from there it pores into the galley. This is NOT good. Luckily we met Willem Hendriks, a local friendly handyman. He organises a proper water pump and out the water goes. Nothing is coming in. Strange. It might be coming in from the rudders haft when we are motoring? If that’s the case we are in real trouble. Anyway now it’s time for a test ride. Out on the river and Willem is crawling around all over the boat. Soon there is a shout from the “lazaretto”; “I found the leak!”.
Water is pumping in from the worn out exhaust hose where there are cracks. It means that during all the time motoring from Makkum water has been pumped into the hull.
It’s Friday and no way to get 11 m:s of the size we need to replace the old worn out exhaust pipe. The pipe has been broken all the time and what we thought was water caused by condense actually was this leak all the time.
Willem has to get the new hose first thing Monday morning (yesterday) from a place about an hours drive from here. To get the old hose out was the hardest job. At the end we needed to use our electrical winch in order to drag it out. It took us the whole day to istall the new hose, three pieces of about a total length of 9 m. Around six everything was in place and tested. Thank you Willem!
