Koh Phayam

Koh Phayam is in the Andaman Sea, we are anchored Ao Kao Kwai Bay with a few other boats, not crowded at all.  There are a number of restaurants along the beach and if you take the cement path beside Mr. GAO’s you will get to the cement road that takes you to the village.  Each one of the restaurants seem to have their own specialty, we and Killkea have tried very hard to "research" each one….as long as research is defined as drinking and drinking….and eating.  When we first arrived there were lots of Canadian boats, it was nice to see so many Canadian flags flying in the breeze.

Sea Mist is out there hard to see which boat is ours, but our tender is the one in front.   This is a shot from the other side of the beach.  The French restaurant has a great wooden carving of two hornbill birds or fondly known as Klong Kleng as well as croissants and baguettes!

No matter which restaurant you are eating at the sunsets are always spectacular.

The latest mascot of the French restaurant.

We don’t just eat and look at the sunsets, we went for a walk to the village on the cement road, not to be confused with the yellow brick road.

Okay so maybe we did spend a lot of time eating and drinking.

Nancy and Chris, sy Amulet, Marian and David, sy Killkea 2 and John and a perfect stranger in the background giving me the peace sign.

Hippy Dippy House

There is a structure at one end of the beach that yachties and locals call the Hippy House, here is why…

It looks like a twisted Gilligan’s Island.

They constructed most of it with the driftwood that washed up from the Dec 2004 Tsunami that devasted so much of this part of Thailand. I’m sure they have scoured other beaches as there is a lot of wood in this weird and wonderful house, bar, 1/2 boat, clock tower…

The Tattoo Parlour

Upper deck, they have built a ship that has gone aground, the upper deck is used to enjoy a drink and the fabulous sunsets.

The Clock Tower with a working clock.

Patio bar where we had drinks.

An awesome newel post, lots of imagination and creativity going on.

A hippy dippy customer.  Marian and I talked to an Italian who has a homemade boat in the bay, but likes to hang out at the Hippy Bar.  He has been coming here for years, you do feel like you have gone back in time to the 60’s!

Whoever started to build this menagerie of buildings had a lot of imagination as well as carpentry knowledge, the structure is solid, although it looks fragile.  They are very welcoming to backpackers as well as curious yachties like ourselves.  They welcome everyone, you don’t see that too often, including animals.
