Another very early start to cover another 40 plus miles, to Aveiro, a largish port. This coast is very exposed with miles upon miles of sandy beaches and very little shelter.
A good sail became very lively just as we were approaching the estuary. Were called up on the VHF by the port authority asking for our intentions. Had to keep them informed due to numerous ship movements. They were happy for us to anchor in the bay off the airfield.
Arrived in the estuary during the last of the ebb, speed indicated 6 knots , but barely made 3 over the ground with the current against us. Anchored in very shallow water away from the other boats for a prompt getaway.
Weather forecast indicated strong winds coming in. Didn’t want to be stuck at anchor, so day 3 of very early starts. Informed port authority of our movements at 6:30am - pleased to hear ship movements only started at 7 am! Popped out of the estuary like a champagne cork out of a bottle, making almost 9 knots over the ground.
Knew the winds were going to be light but ended up motoring the entire 56 miles as winds only got up to 8 knots just as we approached Pavoa de Varzim, 30 miles north of Porto. Another British boat left just ahead of us and we followed them all the way, they did manage to sail a little but reckon they’re not weighed down with as many spares and “stuff”( F can’t throw anything away)
Had earmarked this marina as a possibility for leaving the boat for our return trip to the UK. Its proximity to Porto airport makes it very attractive. The new marina certainly seems substantial and sheltered enough, so decision made and flights booked.
The downside- the facilities and marina office are in the old marina, 15 minutes walk away. Now need to sort lines, fenders, empty fridge etc to ready her for being left.
