Next destination, the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club in Conception Bay. The OCC Port Officer for St John’s has invited us to his award’s ceremony tomorrow evening. We had to come.
Up again at 5am and set off knowing that we’d have to go far off the coast to get the wind and then tack back in. Got to Cape St Francis in one tack, in thick fog, grateful for the new radar. It took 4 hours.

Fog lifted going round the point then subjected to frequent heavy showers. Wind now on the nose but decided to motor to get there. On the plus side a warm southerly wind.
A heard a snort and turned to see a large whale, probably a minke, diving back down a few feet parallel to the boat. A mixture of excitement and anxiety. It didn’t reappear. Phew.
Arriving at RYNC, we were called up on the radio by Ted who had been out sailing. We tied up on the fuel pontoon, he passed us in his boat, moored up then helped us through the process of filling up. Never experienced self service on the boat before. Moved onto the berth Ted had arranged for us, with him and his sailing friend Bob taking the lines. No cleats, not an easy dock to tie onto. Grateful for their help.
He kindly showed us the facilities,( the washing machine awaits!) we’ll meet again at the awards ceremony tomorrow.
Rib night at the restaurant, like a Sunday roast (but huge) with Yorkshire pudding. Delicious, but not used to so much meat.
