Woke to heavy rain, but at least it’s warm so donned lightweight waterproofs and got the boat ready for the off. The rain makes for a very verdant landscape. Decided to make for Saõ Miguel, as a very calm spell forecast and would be stuck somewhere for the best part of two weeks. Witnessed a full rainbow over the harbour.
First dolphin sighting as we left the harbour, looked very dainty but dorsal fins not in keeping with harbour porpoises.
A very slow rolly start, little wind but lumpy seas made for very uncomfortable sailing

Left Horta behind and sailed off the coast of Pico.

Once away from the islands the wind picked up and we sailed on a broad reach all the way. Numerous dolphin sightings, particularly initially while close to the islands. An abundance of food? Spotted them leaping out of the water, they’d come and visit but wouldn’t stay long. Think they were more interested in feeding. Took numerous photos but unsurprisingly all depict vast areas of sea! The water is crystal clear here and they are easily spotted under the water with the naked eye and Polaroid sunglasses.
A moonlit night for A’s watch. One boat spotted at changeover. Nothing more.
Saõ Miguel is the main and by far the largest island in the archipelago.
20 miles ish to go. 137 covered so far.
Saõ Miguel under the clouds.
