Preparations under way. Getting back up to speed with the satellite phone, still working but unused since our 2017 Atlanticcrossing. It is needed for weather forecasts and emergencies. Bought a Garmin inReach Mini 2, a compact satellite communicator as a back up. Very compact for travel but not ease of use; in conjunction with the app and a smart phone, however, it is much more user friendly. Hope we don’t need the SOS function on either device.
F has been splicing the Dyneema lines (rope as strong as steel) for new guardrails, a job which has been on the list for a year. The splicing forms a loop at each end for attachment. The original guardrails were plastic coated steel wire but, invisibly stressed in the accident and a bit tatty, so they needed to be replaced. Looking very smart. His forte though is soft shackles.
The loop can be loosened and the knot pulled out, then closed again, used in place of a metal shackle they are immensely strong and don’t need tools to undo. He is in his element, with an enormous fascination for knots and splices, finds it therapeutic.
A did one big shop for provisioning but another top up will be needed. Lots of gaps on shelves just as at home. Preparing for a 10 day trip, may be less, may be more. Have lots of porridge oats if we run out of food.
F fancied porridge, but cooks in 3 mins in microwave at home. Takes 16 minutes on hob- using too much gas just for breakfast. (Ed. Experiments with overnight methods continue)
Had an early Father’s Day meal at Boreal, an excellent restaurant discovered in September. Wearing oilskins to walk there in the pouring rain, after only a third day wearing shorts, the evening was delightful, delicious food and engaging company at the next table; Laura, a chocolatier originally from Australia now living with her French/Canadian partner in Montreal. She knew Exeter, having visited Willie’s Cacao factory nearby. All agreed Boreal to be the best restaurant, probably in the province.
