Arriving back in Santa Maria, astounded by the size of the engineering works to enlarge and renforce the outer breakwater. The two giant cranes are on railway tracks and work throughout the day lifting and dropping the gigantic concrete shapes which tumble into place.

No sooner had we berthed, the fish arrived to clean the bottom of the hull. A feeding frenzy. Will see how good a job they’ve done and how much fouling there still is on the bottom, when we’re lifted out.

Have been anazed by the clarity of the water, marinas are renowned for murky water but here in the Azores it is crystal clear. Numerous fish of varying sizes and colours have been spotted, on almost a Caribbean scale.
The temperatures haven’t dropped significantly yet, 24 degrees day and night but a light breeze helps.
