Day 7 Friday.
A awestruck by the phosphorescence in the water last night. Diamonds in the sky and in the breaking waves and the wake. Beautiful. She did get rained on briefly but all was good.
F had a surprise on his watch . Heard a cracking sound as if something had fallen from the sky onto the deck. Discovered a 500cm thin steel rod with a bolt on the end. Sleuth that he is, F had to work out what it was? Think it’s the burgee mast from the wind instrument at the top of the main mast.
Etiquette/ Protocol!! requires you to fly your club’s burgee(flag) from the highest point. Not sure how many people would do that and at the rate they get shredded if left up too long; wouldn’t want to keep going up the mast to replace it! Our flag halyard is lower down and more accessible.
The wind has dropped considerably, now bobbing along at 4 or 5 knots. This is probably it for the rest of the trip in the Azores High. Looks like we might need to try the cruising chute ( a very light weight sail). That will be a challenge to get it out of the sail locker as the dinghy is on the foredeck covering the hatches through which we pass everything. It also makes for little room to manoeuvre either side.
Keep spotting what initially looked like plastic bottles but realised they were probably jellyfish and possibly Portuguese Men of War?
Shan’t be swimming here!
Now on Azorean time so no jet lag just knackered from limited sleep!
800 miles covered.
