Left Sivier Island on Friday and decided to motor north as winds going to be unfavourable for a few days. Crept into Back Harbour, the community being called Paradise! not mentioned in any pilot books but looked a good spot for the night.
It was rather gloomy in Paradise but obviously a good spot for lobsters, given the number of pots close inshore.
Set off, next morning, togged up in maximum layers aiming for Fogo - again under engine (known as our No 1 diesel sail) to get round the headland - 6 degrees but felt like zero with windchill. A doesn’t like the cold.
Coming round the headland of North Twillingate Island the seas became very lumpy, like being in a washing machine. After one of F ‘s regular engine checks, he discovered that oil had leaked into the bilges. Diverted into Twillingate where we were greeted by Ruth and Eric whom we’d met in Lewisporte.
The rubber drain pipe cap had come off and with all the rocking and rolling, oil had slopped out. The afternoon was spent cleaning up - a messy job but we had the incentive of drinks at 5 with our neighbours. Eric had also supplied us with extra oil as our supply was insufficient to refill and it was Sunday so no shops open. Newfoundlanders go out of their way to be helpful.
