Position at 0001 01/08/13

Hove to. Had a stonking sail from about 1300 onwards. Too stonking, I didn’t want to be here until about 0600.

I suppose technically I’m not exactly hove to as I only have a pocket-handkerchief of a headsail up. I headed into wind then lashed the helm hard into wind. She falls off then rounds up again. I’m drifting down-wind at about half a knot an hour, three miles off shore and having thirty-minute cat naps. There is another boat out here doing the same , with a tricolour masthead light. No radio contact but they are rolling like hell and it doesn’t look comfortable. It could I suppose be a fishing boat because at some point they disappear and subsequently I see no vessel that might have been them.
