Well, first off every blog should have a picture of
Diamond Rock (actually, HMS Diamond Rock). This is situated off the south coast
of Martinique and during the disagreement with Napoleon, the Brits somehow
managed to get a cannon to the top of the rock, which then proceeded to play
merry hell with French merchant shipping. As 'not tonight' Josephine came from
Martinique, Nappy took this as a personal insult and commanded the French navy
to 'liberate' the rock for France. To cut a long story short, the only way they
could dislodge the gallant British Tars was by crashing a boat loaded with rum
at the base of the rock. They then waited a suitable period until our lads had
disposed of said rum in the time honoured fashion and were then able to re-take
the rock (apparently our boys had ferocious hangovers due to the 'quality' of
the French rum and surrendered without much of a fight!)
Anyway, enough of 'L'Histoire', below pictures of
St Pierre, which in 1902 was destroyed by the volcano in the right hand side of
the picture, and Trouters at anchor.
