Running the port engine yesterday morning for a quick re-charge, Cadey
noticed white smoke. I looked, yep small amount of white smoke and small
amount of exhaust water. Bugger, that'll be the impeller then, well never
mind I have a device called a 'Speedseal' fitted to both engines. Four
knurled knobs hold the water-pump cover on, a couple of twists and the
covers off exposing the impeller. HAH!!!!!
First knob unwilling to turn. Spray all four with penetrating spray and
wait 20 mins. First knob very stiff but comes out OK. 2nd knob, bugger it
broke, came off in me 'and Guv, honest. 3rd knob OK, 4th knob, oh bugger
etc etc.
Can't get the remains of the screws out. Whilst having a think remove old
impeller, one complete blade missing and not in the water pump.
Dis-assemble heat exchanger and retrieve missing blade (surprisingly
accessible, but then again I haven't run the engine yet!!!!!)
Right, what to do. Call for advice. Otto (Vagabond) comes over after
getting back from a walk. HMMM. You'll have to remove the water pump.
Bugger!!!!
Today I will mainly be removing the water pump and swearing a lot. It will
be an all day job, balanced on my stomach across a supporting beam above
the engine bay. Then of course, I still need to get the remains of the two
screws out of the pump casing without stripping the thread.
OH yes, at some point I'd better check the knobs on the starboard engine,
but I think I already know what the story will be, but better here than at
sea!
Apart from all that, both engines serviced and we are planning on beaching
the boat to 'de-barnacle' both hulls next week. Then it'll be Easter, then
we'll think about leaving for Fiji when the weather is suitable.
Boats eh? Don'y you just LURVE 'em?
