Hmmm. A bit lucky to arrive in NZ with a mast!! There are one, possibly two small cracks in the swaging which might have something to do with the shroud failure. The other (good) possibility is that the articulation was restricted where the wire attaches to the mast. There is evidence of uneven movement which might have been the culprit. Now we need to discover why the inner fore stay had similar damage.
The outer fore stay has now been replaced (phew), the cap shroud has been replaced (double phew) and the inner furling gear/stay removed. Both furling gears are receiving a bit of TLC and I should be back at anchor tomorrow with a couple of minor improvements made to fittings etc.
