Batteries

As I suspected, the new batteries are just a tad too big for the existing battery locker. Actually, this is OK because I had vaguely planned on relocating the batteries closer to the centre of the boat, now I have to! The idea will be to built a battery box and put it close(ish) to the electronics bay. Now this will mean that once a month I'll have to remove the back panel of the wardrobe in my cabin and crawl in to check the electrolyte levels, but it's only a five minute job. And of course, I'll gain a large locker in the cockpit, which as long as I don't fill it up with heavy junk will come in very handy, and probably the boat will be a little better balanced. The plan is still to locate the engine starting batteries closer to the individual engines. I'll lose a little storeage space in each aft cabin, but frankly I think it's a better layout. Photos as and when things start happening.
Other news; Martin the Mechanic has got a contract to maintain a dive boat in one of the resorts on the way to the west coast. It's an overnight stay, but he's suggested that if I go with him next time not only will I get a bit of a break (gratis, he says) but I'll be able to take a look at chandleries on the west which apparently are much cheaper than around Suva. For those who have met him, Henning (Smiley) is on his way to a job on the west coast. Hope it works out for him. He doesn't seem too concerned. If the paperwork is not right then he'll return to Suva. Apparently last week it didn't rain in the west, it certainly did here!
Peter the German has re-appeared after his delivery trip from Tortolla to Fiji. Things have got very expensive, he was saying that for a 50ft boat to check in to the Galapagos Isles the fee was US$800! I paid just under US$300. Apparently the cruising permit is now US$1200 PER PERSON!!!!!!! They mustn't want any yachts to visit, glad that I've done it. It's not out of the question that I'll 'go round again', but by the sound of it I won't be stopping at the Galapagos (unless Emma the Agent finds a publisher pdq and they sell a lot of my books).
Hey ho! Rain again today, and the bloody puppy broke into my room and snaffled the hot dogs I was planning on having for supper, but I've fixed the little bastard, I immediately went out and not only replaced the hot dog and the buns, but I brought a large plastic box to put my various 'supplies in'. What really annoyed me was I had just brought the little sod a very large tin of dog food (OK, he has to share that with the cats as well, but I mean, come on, let's have a little gratitude around here!)
