He has got to be kidding. Two boats on reefs.

I had this text message from Martin the Meknik. Keep in mind the sail-drives are bolted in, the props are not properly attached, he has some sort of problem with fitting the rope cutters and THERE ARE NO ENGINES IN THE BOAT.

QUOTE: Hi Peter can U arrange payment for one engine $800 UNQUOTE.

I rang him, he was on the boat to Kadavu Island. I explained that WHEN BOTH engines are in the boat and running OK THEN I will pay him. Mind you, to take the engines out of the boat and strip them he charged about F$350 per engine so we are going to have a discussion about price, late completion of work etc etc.

That was the low part of the day, which occurred just before lunch. The first part had gone OK-ish. I discovered that a couple of wall panels have gone walkabout, but I think we have enough timber to improvise. The elektrikery- men are on voice mail but Butto was cleaning the floor in the saloon and it's really come up nicely. In a fit of temper and despondency I went to the Hop Hing and had veggie chow mien.

After lunch and after I'd gone to see John the GRP and moaned about Martin, Butto suggested we put up the blinds. I was in a better mood because John had said 'no engines Monday, give me authority to deal with it'. John is in fact bigger than Martin and it's mainly muscle. I'm seriously considering it.

Anyway, after a few minutes puzzling out how the blinds fitted, it is almost a year since I took them off, we were successful. We've found most of the bits and can improvise what we can't find. The blinds work, but inevitably need re-cleaning.

Virtually home sweet home. The pictures don't do it justice, the blinds really make one hell of a difference.

All of a sudden the boat looks like she's coming together, particularly as I don't have 'droopy' spreaders anymore.

I also had a visit from a couple of Kiwis who'd just arrived. They'd seen the boat on the reef last year and reckoned that I'd never get her off, let alone get to the stage I'm at now. They came over to tell me 'well done', which was a nice morale booster.

Speaking of Kiwis, some sad news. Another boat, the second one this season, has gone onto a reef near Savu Savu. A total loss as she apparently sank, but both crew were saved. You can't trust the local papers to get the details right, but I do know the crew are OK. Apparently it happened around noon a few days ago. The boat name is/was Touche. More details when I hear them. The first boat I don't have many details on. It is  Macgregor 50 (not familiar with it) and 'they' can't do much in the way of salvage right now as there is still a large swell running. The Dive Shop say it's do-able once the weather calms down a bit, provided there's anything left to salvage.

Finally, the proposed piccy for the cover of the eBook which I haven't finished yet but will once I'm at anchor!
