Manggar. Number 1 so far!

OK, it's not really fair to label a place 'the best stop'. Everybody in all the places we visited has tried so hard, been so friendly and provided so much that to try and make a 'league table' is impossible but that said....

The farewell celebration was another outstanding affair. It was held in a restaurant overlooking the lagoon which may one day be a marina. The first thing that happened and bear in mind that East Belitung is predominantly a Muslim area, was we each got a couple of ice cold  beers. On the house! Quite an unexpected gesture. The meal was simple but good andf there was plenty of it. Yet again the Regent showed up and 'worked the room'. This is the first place where 'the head honcho' has taken such a personal interest and made a point of shaking hands. The police chief also was there and another couple of officials, each of whom was introduced by the Regent.

After that we were bussed to what was billed as a fashion show but in reality it was a fashion show with entertainment thrown in. Wonderful if very noisy stuff and of course we all got up and danced. Manggar would be the top spot in terms of sheer generosity but it's not about what we're given in the way of freebies, it's all about people. Everywhere we've been in Indonesia the people have been very welcoming and helpful but in Manggar they went an extra, extra mile.
