The repaired mast strut was about 2mm too long, due to the welded insert. I asked Charles at the Dive shop to trim it back for me and now it's just two pubic hairs too short with the attachment correctly located in the tube. It may well be possible to successfully bodge it.
The upper strut doesn't fit either, which is slightly strange as it wasn't bent. However, the cross-tree on the other side of the mast has been bent which could well have altered things, so the job tomorrow (again) will be to put the lower strut in place and then figure out a way to straighten the cross-tree.
It might be partially my fault. I'm 20kgs heavier than Butto, so it makes sense to send him up the mast and having done it a couple of times now he's quite keen. I'm not keen to go up because his English isn't brilliant and at least if I control the hoisting I can control safety. His lack of English is getting a bit frustrating for both of us, but as I said he's keen and willing and can generally puzzle things out for himself after a while. It is difficult swinging around to perform precise work or apply any force so I shouldn't complain.
