Friday 5th August – Pórto Koufó, Khalkidhiki – Néa Marmarás, Khalkidhiki

We didn’t sleep well last night.  The fishing boats seemed to be in and out throughout the night, and then around 4am the wind went north east and strengthened...

… needless to say it was the wrong direction for the yacht next to us and we think it swung around onto the motor boat on the mooring.  Richard stuck his head up on deck to see it with its lights on, its crew on deck, and busy pulling up its anchor.  We then watched nervously as he motored around in the dark, using his searchlight, looking for somewhere else to anchor.

Eventually, sure enough, he laid his anchor right across our chain.  I told him and he apologised and said he would be gone early so it wouldn’t be a problem, mentioning that he had 20m of chain out in 12m water.  This is far too little according to any book you read!  Afraid we would end up with his anchor dragging across our chain I said it was too little and he must put more out.  Thankfully his skipper agreed as he came forward and they put out much more chain – phew.  Guess what – the boat is from the same charter company as the boat that hit us on Limnos.

We didn’t sleep well for the rest of the night and we were up and out this morning and have come up to Néa Marmarás where there is a small harbour we wanted to see, just across from Porto Carras.  Reputedly quite busy we were not sure if there would be space on the pontoons but there was and the good news is that it is free to berth here.  I had quite a long chat to the Romanian skipper of the boat next to us who is awaiting the owner’s return.

Although there is a wave breaker pontoon, the sea breeze this afternoon has made it a little rolly.  Fortunately it has quietened this evening.  Richard went for a walk around town late afternoon.  A few yachts have come in late this evening and now the pontoon is full.
