Monday 21st June – Khania, Crete

This morning we said goodbye to our Dutch neighbours, Geert and Ineke on Esmeralda as they headed off east; we are going to set off in the other direction when the weather is fit again.

Strong westerly winds are forecast to continue for the next few days as a weather system comes through and we are one of three yachts waiting for a fair wind to take us west.  We have all been here long enough for the marinaro to leave the three yachts effectively in charge of the berthing arrangements and today the skippers have helped in a couple of yachts whilst he was off having his siesta.

Late morning we managed to fit in a walk around the harbour (Richard insisting on going via the Venetian fort – well, it’s been a while…) and out the other side of town, past the swimming stadium where a water polo match was taking place, to one of the beaches to stretch our legs.  This afternoon we have spent back on board and the wind has got up again.

The final yacht we all helped in this evening is beside us where Esmeralda was.  The yacht is much larger and, after helping them in, we had to move all our lines to give them more space.  Sadly, the yacht has four people on it who seem to be lacking courtesy; the people helping the yacht in were not thanked at all.  It will be good if they go tomorrow.

On a much brighter note, we dug out the Cobb BBQ and set it up in the cockpit and had a lovely BBQ this evening – our first this year with the Cobb.  It gave us the opportunity to try out a ‘cobble stone’ which you use instead of coals – Pam and Andy on Grand Slam had given us a couple to try.  Pleased to say it worked a treat.
