Saturday 29th August – Port Atheni, Meganissi – Nísos Formíkoula

We went to bed early last night and slept through soundly in this quiet anchorage.  This morning, with no wind to create a ripple on the water, the anchorage was incredibly clear – letting us clearly see the sea bed.  When it is this clear it is difficult to realise how deep it really is, it seems so much closer.

As we were up early, we decided to set off for the very small island of Formíkoula, south of Meganissi and just off the south west corner of Kálamos.

When we arrived there was a large commercial ‘twin mast’ day trip boat anchored in the tiny bay and one small motor boat but the commercial boat was just gathering up its guests from where they were swimming in the water and preparing to leave, so we held station whilst he left and then berthed in his place; soon after, the motor boat left, and we had the place to ourselves J

The water was crystal clear and we set the hook in sand and went snorkelling.  The bay is reputed to have monk seals in residence but they did not come out to play whilst we were there.

We took the dinghy for a gentle run around the island; there are some interesting caves but still no seals in sight.

We stayed there for a few hours, relaxing in total peace and quiet – it was heavenly.
